ARISE AND GO TO CANAAN

 TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 1:1-8

INTRODUCTION:

The Israelites have come through their years in the wilderness. Now they are in the desert east of the Jordan in Moab, on the brink of entering into the land promised to Abraham their forefather. They again acknowledged the Lord’s rule over them. This event recorded in the Deuteronomy came after Moses and the Israelites had defeated Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites in Transjordan. The purpose of the book of Deuteronomy is to remind and reassure us of the spiritual truths that pertain to the redemption offered to all people and for these truths concerning God and Man that never change.

I:   THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY 1:1-5

a.    The Jews title each book in the OT by the first words or statements – v.1

b.    Emphasis on the word of the spiritual leader (Moses) v.1.

The purpose of the geographical location is to authenticate the truth of the incident.

c.     The date given must be counted from the time they left Egypt.

By now all the rebellious people had died in the wilderness.

d.    The story of the defeat of Sihon and Og is described in Numbers 21:21-35 in more detail. This reminds us that no matter the strength of man, God’s word still prevails (v.4).

e.    From this place Jericho was attacked so there was need to prepare the people of God for the new land hence the exposition of the law by Moses.

II:  THUS SAITH THE LORD 1:6-8

a.    You have stayed long enough on this mountain v.6.

The problem with us is that we are too comforted when we have not reached our destination. Have you stayed too long in a place?

b.    God’s instruction – Break camp and move v.7

In this verse we have the same boundary of the land that God promised Abraham – Gen.15:18.

Are you afraid to break camp? Go up! Arise it’s time to more on and take over our possession.

c.     For God, the land has been given. God or heaven has completed the (spiritual) take over. You must now take it over as your possession. That is your responsibility.

CONCLUSION

Palestine was the chosen land for the chosen people, not, it should be noticed, chosen by them but was chosen for them. Your comfort and possession is not where you are. You must arise, break camp and take over as yours what God has given you.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

God, give me the faith of a little child!

A faith that will look to Thee –

That never will falter and never fail,

But follow Thee trustingly. – Shower man

Remember, the closer we walk with God,

The clearer we see His guidance. - I. S. David
